Section: I   Instructional Program
Policy Code: IHC   Ranking of Students
Policy:

Senior students shall be ranked at the end of the senior year for determination of honor designations.  For a student to be eligible to be Valedictorian, Salutatorian and Class Orator of the Ocean Springs High School, the student must attend Ocean Springs High School during his/her junior and senior years.  However, failure to meet this attendance requirement will not keep a student from being an honor graduate.

Beginning with the graduating Class of 1990, class rank will be determined by quality points based on the difficulty level of classes.  Grade point averages will still be computed on the 4-point scale.  Quality point rank will also be used to determine honor graduates.

The Valedictorian shall be the student graduating with the highest quality point rank, the Salutatorian shall be the one with the second highest quality point rank, and the Class Orator shall be the one with the third highest quality point rank.  The three top students shall be designated as graduating with Highest Honors.

High Honor graduates shall be those students who have earned a quality point rank of 3.67 or a numerical average of 89.5.  Students who graduate with a quality point rank of 3.33 or a numerical average of 86.5 shall be graduated with Honors.
